Welcome

Hello and welcome to my new website. I have been a journalist for the past four decades and here you will find a selection of some of my interviews, features, restaurant reviews and travel pieces. I write freelance for both the UK and Australian markets and my work appears regularly in the Radio Times, The Observer, Daily Mail and Fairfax newspapers.

Over a lifetime of journalism, I have been fortunate enough to have interviewed some of the most extraordinary global figures in music, politics, art and literature. Each month, or so, we will be featuring an encounter From the Archive – from Benazir Bhutto to Donald Trump, from Madonna to Elizabeth Taylor, John Updike to Oprah Winfrey. These pieces will be featured with a new introduction by me putting the interview, on occasion, into some kind of historical perspective and in some cases describing the impact they had during and after publication, or perhaps how my feelings about the subject have changed in the intervening time. I hope this will be of interest to anyone revisiting the interviews or coming across them for the first time.

Beryl’s many lovers, welcomed by her husband over a G&T

13 October 2016 by Ginny Dougary

Beryl Bainbridge lied as a child and it was a habit that stuck. Exasperated by the writer’s constant verbal fudging over her shenanigans with married men, one friend wrote to her: ‘Oh, you never tell the truth. You’re dreadfully dishonest’ — six years went by before the friendship was healed. Bainbridge’s biographer, Brendan King, was …

Shirley Henderson on singing her way out of jail in Urban Hymn

30 September 2016 by Ginny Dougary

Shirley Henderson is in prison again, which is an irresistible invitation to say she has “previous”. Urban Hymn – in which she plays social worker Kate, weighed down with a secret sadness, who comes to the rescue of a female young offender with a great voice – is at least the third project in which …

The woman who made sex fun: Helen Gurley Brown liberated the single girl with an advice guide that sold 2 million copies in just 3 weeks

16 September 2016 by Ginny Dougary

A cartoon in the New Yorker in 1968 showed a city street with the word ‘sex’ scrawled over doorways, in windows, on trucks and water towers, and a matronly pedestrian saying to her male companion: ‘I suppose we have Helen Gurley Brown to thank for this.’ The Gurley Brown who emerges as a kitten with …

Little girl whose only choice was suicide or murder: How one woman survived a traumatic childhood

12 August 2016 by Ginny Dougary

There are two ways the child of an unpredictable and wild parent can go: the Lindsay Lohan route or the fictional, but recognisable, way of Saffy (daughter of Ab Fab’s Edina). An old friend of author Ariel Leve’s mother told Leve’s boss after meeting Ariel again as an adult: ‘I always wondered how that little …

David Gilmour: ‘I’ve been bonded to Charlie since he was three. We were incensed by the injustice’

6 August 2016 by Ginny Dougary

Charlie Gilmour went to prison for climbing the Cenotaph in 2011. Three years later, he returned to prison to hear a concert that changed his life – and his family’s David Gilmour is the singer and guitarist in Pink Floyd, now a solo artist. He is married to the novelist Polly Samson and adopted her …

Steven Spielberg and Mark Rylance: the bromance behind the BFG

22 July 2016 by Ginny Dougary

There is definitely a bromance going on here. Like an old couple, the actor and the director have their mole-brown felt hats companionably cosied up to each other (trilby for Mark Rylance, homburg for Steven Spielberg), on the arm of their sofa. They are fascinated by what one another has to say and, from time …

Robert Bathurst

12 July 2016 by Ginny Dougary

Robert Bathurst has me trapped in a farce worthy of Feydeau. We are sitting in the living room of the Sussex house he shares with his artist wife, Victoria, and their four daughters. Coffee had been made and served and we had settled in our seats in the living-room when – horror! – my host spotted …

Cyndi Lauper: I still wanna have fun

26 June 2016 by Ginny Dougary

Cyndi Lauper is talking to me at the most unrock-star hour of 7:30am from a tour bus somewhere in America – possibly, she thinks, Florida. It is, she says. “so cruel”, but there’s stuff to promote and she is a helluva trooper. There is something extra discombobulating about her much-commented-on adenoidal Brooklyn accent (she was …

‘I may fail miserably’

12 June 2016 by Ginny Dougary

Grief derailed Robert Peston after his wife died but now he has a new job – and a new Sunday morning TV series. Robert Peston arrives 30 minutes late in a burst of scrambled energy that makes the air quiver, squeaks “sorrysorrysorrysorry” in a highpitched falsetto worthy of Freddie Mercury, before collapsing in a chair …

Kennedys never cry: Like her brother JFK, Kick Kennedy was raised with a stiff upper lip and a will of iron. The English aristocracy loved her – but her life ended in tragedy

19 May 2016 by Ginny Dougary

A summer holiday in the Thirties with the Kennedys at their Hyannis Port compound, just above the elbow of Cape Cod, might have seemed an entrancing proposition – but the reality sounds rather more stressful. Yes, there were endless days swimming and diving, water-skiing and sailing, with table tennis and board games on the rare …
