Welcome

Hello and welcome to my new website. I have been a journalist for the past four decades and here you will find a selection of some of my interviews, features, restaurant reviews and travel pieces. I write freelance for both the UK and Australian markets and my work appears regularly in the Radio Times, The Observer, Daily Mail and Fairfax newspapers.

Over a lifetime of journalism, I have been fortunate enough to have interviewed some of the most extraordinary global figures in music, politics, art and literature. Each month, or so, we will be featuring an encounter From the Archive – from Benazir Bhutto to Donald Trump, from Madonna to Elizabeth Taylor, John Updike to Oprah Winfrey. These pieces will be featured with a new introduction by me putting the interview, on occasion, into some kind of historical perspective and in some cases describing the impact they had during and after publication, or perhaps how my feelings about the subject have changed in the intervening time. I hope this will be of interest to anyone revisiting the interviews or coming across them for the first time.

Mike Figgis: ‘Why I don’t do porn’

20 August 2011 by Ginny Dougary

A conversation with Mike Figgis can lead you into unexpected places — such as why a Gypsy once steered him to swim around the reeds, in what way he might be a Geordie Buddhist and the impossibility of making porn sexy. For someone who is associated with rather brooding, intense films, he has a lightness …

New Orleans

12 August 2011 by Ginny Dougary

It must be possible, indeed, advisable, to take a break from eating and drinking when you visit New Orleans but it’s more difficult than you might think since temptation beckons from every street corner. The last time I was there, three decades ago, was when I was close to the age of the older of my two sons, …

Miami and Key West

12 August 2011 by Ginny Dougary

You’ve seen Miami so often in countless films and tv series that when you visit it for the first time, it’s like bumping into a famous person who looks so familiar that you are convinced you actually know them. But if Miami were a celebrity, she would toss her immaculately groomed hair, give you a …

Ewan McGregor: ‘I had a drinking problem’

9 July 2011 by Ginny Dougary

When Ewan McGregor appointed his chosen rendezvous for our breakfast interview – at the eleventh hour, alarmingly literally, the night before – messages were left with the manager to reserve a quiet table. We may still think of him as a barely grown-up Scottish lad, but he is a Hollywood film star, after all, whose …

The multifaceted John Malkovich

11 June 2011 by Ginny Dougary

John Malkovich and I are ensconced in his hotel room in Recklinghausen, near Düsseldorf, having a cosy chat about murder – and, in particular, the Austrian serial killer, Jack Unterweger, who is the latest in a line of mad, bad and dangerous characters the actor has inhabited in his long career. He’s playing the celebrity …

Sir Richard Branson: ‘I don’t trust myself with heroin’

4 June 2011 by Ginny Dougary

Sir Richard Branson, with his 300-plus companies, has been an ambassador for entrepreneurship, crazy sporting activities (attempting world records in hot-air ballooning; playing golf in the dark), space travel and, with his most recent announcement, deep-sea exploration (Virgin Oceanic). But now, perhaps, a new frontier-breaking role awaits him: the grand ambassador for dope. He is …

The complicated life of Ray Davies

21 May 2011 by Ginny Dougary

Ray Davies repeats something that Ned Sherrin, the late broadcaster and writer, told him: “Ned, who understood me, said, ‘Ray, you remind me of someone who’s got an open wound on the top of their head and nobody can see it’.” This image was a response to me asking one of our best-loved songwriters about …

Here is my interview with Sir David Attenborough for the Radio Times, May 2011

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HAPPY 100 to the great Sir David Attenborough

6 May 2011 by sbsadmin

Frozen Planet Four years in the making, the BBC’s landmark series reveals polar life as we may never see it again. David Attenborough, at 85, talks about his first visit to the North Pole, the death of his wife and what gets him up at 4am  The Uncommon Silver-Crested Warbler is singing with full-throated ease. …

Monica Ali: from Brick Lane to Kensington

2 April 2011 by Ginny Dougary

We had been discussing her husband, Simon Torrance, a management consultant, and I asked Monica Ali whether they had met at Oxford, where she read PPP. “No, he went to the other one,” she says, and I nod, “… Loughborough Poly”, at which we both scream with laughter. This joke was unexpectedly playful, apart from …

Martin Amis on grief, Libya and leaving London

26 March 2011 by Ginny Dougary

I wondered who would bring up the Islamist episode first and, in the event, it was Amis — as cool and breezy as can be. I had arrived early and killed time sitting on a bench in the gardens opposite the substantial Chalk Farm house Amis has lived in on and off for the past …
